A Loooooong Weekend

So in the medical residency least I think least I know with Tim's residency... when you get a Saturday and Sunday off they call it a "golden weekend!" "Golden weeknds" are wonderful! When you have to work both Saturday and Sunday they call it a "black weekend!" Tim's has certainly worked his share of "black weekends" but this last one was extra long. Tim had to work 12 hour days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!  I was not looking forward to this weekend but with plenty of family movie nights, popcorn, many treats and a few adventures we made it! Thank goodness!

Saturday I decided to pack up the kids and drive over to Gilbert to check out the temple over there. We are lucky to live so close to 3 temples. We live the closest to the Phoenix Temple and had made it over to the Mesa temple several times but just hadn't made it over to Gilbert. It's about 45 minutes away. We've talked several times about going over as a good Sunday activity but have hesitated because we figured like our close Phoenix temple when it's not open for operation they probably lock the gates. So I figured Saturday would be a great day for a visit. I knew the gates would be open so we could walk around and enjoy the temple grounds AND we could stop by Waffle Love, a Utah-based liege waffle place. They have a food truck that travels around Phoenix but have a store front over in Gilbert close to the temple.

The Gilbert Temple is gorgeous! I am so glad we made it over there and can't wait to go back and take Tim. The girls love to see the temple! I am so thankful that they already know what a special place it is and that they get so excited when they spot it! The girls loved hopping around by the fountains and Kate got a kick out of seeing the several brides (and grooms) that had recently got married that were outside taking pictures. Our little adventure was a huge success and it helped fill our up our day without dad. And oh yes, my waffle was amazing!

I'm pretty sad...for some strange reason when I last uploaded my phone to my computer for some strange reason some of the photos didn't import correctly and I made the mistake of telling the computer to go ahead and delete the pictures that had been imported...thus losing probably about 50 photos from my phone. I'm super bummed but am thankful they weren't really important pictures like right after Henry's birth or a trip to Disneyland or something like that. So here are a few pics from the Gilbert temple. Fortunately I had texted my mom and Tim a few pictures so I was able to snag those from their texts.

I had to include these pictures I took on Sunday of the girls outside swinging. We decided to keep Henry away from church until he was ~ 6 weeks. I had originally thought we'd go back this past Sunday but I decided I didn't want to do my first Sunday back at church with three children alone. Thus we took it real easy at home on Sunday and the girls got to stay in the pajamas and loved it. Kate actually asked me today when she can do it again! We had a nice Sunday home. I was worried after two previously long days I wasn't sure how it would go... I'm happy to report it went pretty smooth and I even got a nice nap! Life actually is really good! I shouldn't complain. Tim's hours can be really long but we are so fortunate that although Tim doesn't like being away from us that he loves his job! He loves his patients, works with really great people and is happy! And we are happy too! I've had a lot of people ask me how the transition from 2 to 3 kids has gone. We are certainly out numbered now and it isn't easy but for's been easier than the transition from 1 to 2! I won't get into too much but I think I was just more prepared this time. I was already used to having to share my time between children and knew I couldn't feel guilty about how I now couldn't spend as much time with each child. I remember I was so worried about having Kate watch too much tv...this time I have just  let things go a bit more and haven't hesitated to turn on a show for the girls while I've needed to care for Henry or lay down. And although they can sure fight, the girls can also play so well with each other. It is so comforting to know they have each other and I love nothing more than hearing them play together! I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to be the mother to these three sweet children! Being a mom is a tough job... but it's what I've always wanted to be and I feel so blessed to be primarily responsible for the nurturing and care of these 3 amazing kids!

Not related to the weekend but I wanted to share these pics too. On Tuesday we meet up with Kate's two best friends Iris and Lola at the splash pad.'s already hot enough for splash pads and swimming. It got up to 95 degrees today. I didn't get any pics of them enjoying the water (I was feeding Henry at the time) but I did capture a few of them eating snacks. When we arrived I couldn't believe they had the fire place going (this splash pad is actually just a bunch of fountains in the middle of an outdoor shopping mall so they have a bunch of comfy chairs and this fireplace to make it homey) but with the frozen temperature of the water the girls were happy to have a place to go warm up!

Henry- 1 month

Happy 1 month to our little Henry! I can't believe he's already 1 month old yet at the same time it seems like forever ago we were at the hospital welcoming him to our family! Henry is seriously such a good baby! He is so calm and sweet. And goes with the flow and is an amazing traveler! I guess being a third child you have to do that?! We are so thankful for his easy going nature and his good health! Here are a few highlights:

Weight: 9 lbs 2 oz (28th%ile)
Length: 20-1/2 in (8th%ile)
  • Eats every 2-3 hours during the day! Usually closer to 2 hours...this guy really likes to eat!
  • Cluster feeds in the evening eating every hour...he seems to always need to eat right when we are sitting down to eat dinner, then when I'm trying to put the girls to bed, and again before going to bed. It's really tough trying to get the girls to bed while feeding when Tim isn't home. But I'm getting better at it and fortunately have only had to do it a handful of times by myself.
  • Goes to bed for the night about 8:30-9pm and then typically does a 5 hour sleeping stretch. So he's then usually up at 12-1am, then again around 4-5am, and then up at 7am. So that's only up TWICE a night! He's a champ!
  • He is still a pretty slow eater. Most feedings take about 40 minutes. He'll get more efficient, right?!
  • Car rides put him to sleep. He is so good about going with the flow and running errands. And sleeps well in his car seat. But he does take a much better, longer nap in the afternoon at home.
  • Henry is an awesome traveler! He did so great on our road trip to St. George this last week.
  • He likes his pacifier but doesn't love it yet. Perhaps we should try a different brand. But I think more than anything it's just when he wants to eat, he wants to eat!
  • From the beginning his hair was reddish. I feel like it sometimes looks really red and then other times just has a little. But right now it's definitely a light red. I am so curious to see what happens as he gets older.
  • Favorite food: breast milk
  • Favorite book: whatever his big sisters want to read to him
Sure love you Hen-Hen!

Millie wanted to read Henry stories while I tried to take a few pics.

Vaction Part 2- Road Trip

On Wednesday we hit the road and drove to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon! Tim had never been and this was at the top of our AZ Bucket List! And it did not disappoint! Unfortunately Kate was less than impressed with it all and wasn't too interested in checking out the visitor center much to Tim's dismay. We did watch the movie, I nursed Henry (twice) and we got to see quite a bit! It felt a bit rushed, we only spent 2-1/2 hours there, but we loved getting to explore such a beautiful place!

The Grand Canyon...South Rim

We spent Wednesday night in Page, AZ. And went to go check out Horseshoe Bend on Thursday morning! We had heard it was a pretty short hike with a spectacular views. We started out but quickly realized it was longer than we initially expected (although it was just under 2 miles total) and that Kate wearing flip flops was not going to work with all the red sand. Tim hurried back to the car to retrieve supplies. I wasn't so sure it was going to be worth it but boy was it! Holy smokes this place is breathtaking! And the most amazing thing happened...Kate hiked the whole time and didn't complain once! Even hiking uphill on the way back. It was amazing and I was so proud of her! Henry slept in my wrap the whole time and Millie bonked her head just as we were about to start out so Tim was holding her to console her and she fell asleep just as we reached the edge of the cliff.

The edge is totally unprotected which is awesome but also terrifying at the same time. I was actually kind of thankful that Millie was asleep and Kate asked me a couple times why I was holding her hand so tight :) I am SO glad we took the time to do this! What a gorgeous place! I sure love that red rock!

We then arrived in St. George Thursday afternoon! The girls wanted to head straight to the pool. Our pool here in Phoenix isn't heated and with cool nights it isn't really warm enough to swim in yet. The girls and Tim enjoyed swimming, we had dinner at the condo we rented from VRBO, and then we headed over to Nielsen's Frozen Custard along with everyone else that was in St. George for Spring Break! It was crazy busy but so delicious!

Then Friday I was able to meet up with my girls! Like I previously mentioned...some of my high school girl friends planned a girls trip for our 30th birthdays! As they discussed when to go I wondered if/how I could go! It wasn't like I'd be able to leave the girls home with Tim (I was thinking if they did this pre-Henry). I thought maybe I could get my parents to meet me in St. George? But then the whole having a baby would also be an issue. Turns out the weekend they selected would be right when Henry would be a month old. But as it worked out it coincided with Tim's vacation so we decided to make a family road trip up to St. George, stop and see the Grand Canyon and then Tim could watch the girls and I could go to a few dinners/activities with the girls. A girls trip doesn't exactly work when you have a newborn but I couldn't miss out on this so we'd make it work the best we could!

Friday I met up with the girls at 11am and got to spend the entire day until 8pm catching up, chatting, shopping, getting a pedicure, and going out to dinner with some of my dearest friends from high school! A few of them I have been friends with since 1st grade! Then a few more from junior high and high school. These ladies are amazing! Everyone has had trials and heartaches but also so many joys! Our lives have changed dramatically over the last 12 years, but one thing hasn't changed and that is our friendship. It was remarkable and unique how quickly things felt like the good old days except now we all are married, have children, and have a lot more depth to our stories. I am honored to call these ladies my friends! It was certainly a treasured weekend. Although I am bummed I couldn't do it all and wasn't apart of late night conversations I am very thankful that I could come to any of it. With a new baby I didn't know if it would be possible. Henry just went along with it all. And I am forever thankful for Tim who was willing to use some of his vacation time to make this possible for me!

Tim took the girls to the awesome St. George Children's Museum on Friday! It was amazing! And the girls loved it! Tim probably loved it even more. They also went to see the temple and swam some more. Tim was so willing and happy to take the girls and make it possible for me to be with my girlfriend!I was able to meet up with the girls again on Saturday morning for breakfast and then we had to hit the road back to Phoenix so we could get Tim home for his early morning shift at the hospital on Sunday!

What a fabulous week full of a lot of family time and some great adventures!

Vacation Part 1- Staycation

We enjoyed a little staycation which included a lot of naps, Henry's first visit to the zoo, and a few daddy daughter dates for the girls including attending the Kids Workshop at Home Depot. This has become a new tradition! Both Tim and the girls absolutely love it! It was sooooo nice to be home and have Tim around!!!
