The Garden

The garden is planted!!! Tim has been so excited getting our ground prepped and ready for planting. Gardening is certainly one of his favorite hobbies these days. Tim took Kate to the garden center to buy all our supplies and it has been so fun to see the two of them out working hard in the back yard. This year we planted tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, peas, carrots, pumpkins, and eggplant. Kate really wanted to plant carrots and when we let her pick out her one plant she chose an eggplant?!

I fondly remember how much fun Kate had picking tomatoes last year... it has been fun to have her that much more involved this year!

Herky on Parade

If you know anything about the University of Iowa you know that Iowa fans are pretty intense and love their Hawkeyes! This summer eighty-three uniquely fashioned statues of Herky - the beloved mascot - have been placed all over the city "on parade" for the public to view and enjoy. It's like a large community art project.

We love to go Herky Hunting...meaning we drive around looking for Herky and get out and take a picture! We've made it our quest to find all 83!  Kate is totally obsessed! She wakes up in the morning and asks if we can go Herky hunting...she wakes up from her nap and asks if we can go...she actually has chosen on multiple occasions to go Herky Hunting over going to the park or going out for ice cream. She has excellent eyes and can spot Herky from a 100 miles away :) It's pretty dang cute! We started our quest two weeks ago and am proud to say we've already found 62!!!  Here is a small sampling of the ones we have found!

Kate's Minnie Mouse Birthday Party

After much discussion about the many possibilities for a potential theme for Kate's party we decided on a Minnie Mouse Party! Oh and let me not forget a "Minnie Mouse, Green Drink" party. After pulling out some Sprite for an upset tummy months ago Kate got hooked on wanting Sprite, endearingly called green drink at our house, as part of her party! So in addition to all of the pink, black, and polka dots we did serve mini Sprites with lunch!

We invited eight of Kate's little friends + their mommies and many younger siblings to the occasion. We colored Minnie coloring sheets, frosted and decorated Minnie sugar cookies,  played Pin the Bow on Minnie, and enjoyed a hot dog lunch thanks to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse song, "Hot Dog!" It was such a fun day, a little crazy, but SO fun to celebrate! Kate loved having many of her friends at our house to celebrate and her eyes lit up as we sang to her. Such a special day for our very special girl!

Enjoying her "green drink."

Millie was an angle girl and after enjoying the party for a bit went down for a lengthy nap so I could easily do all the activities.

Kate- 3 years

My-o-my...where to begin?! My baby, the girl who made me a mama is now 3 years old! What? Really how is that even possible?! It's pretty hard to believe...but it also seems like she's been with us forever. Silly girl...for some reason though, Kate would like to think she is four. Whenever someone asks her how old she is, she replies, "I'm not two...I'm four!" I guess this turning 3 thing will take some getting used to!

Happiest of birthdays to my fun-loving, independent, strong-willed, always singing, always dancing, memory of an elephant, spunky Kate! This girl often gives me a run for my money but at the end of the day she is such a sweetie bug and really is such a good girl!

A few fun things about Kate:
  •  Stats: Weighs 29.5 pounds and is 35 inches tall
  • Loves books...we can't leave the library with less than 20 books. We've even maxed out the number of books you can check out on multiple occasions. Current favorites include; the Llama Llama books, Roly Poly Pangolin, How do Dinosaur...series, any Arthur or DW books, Dora the Explorer series, The Boy Who Loves Math, and What Lincoln Said. One our most recent trip to Utah Kate also discovered Richard Scarry and is obsessed with reading What Do People Do All Day? I loved all the Busy Town/Richard Scarry books as a kid and have loved rediscovering the stories with Kate!
  • Kate loves to read...and I find her all of the time describing the pictures to Millie! It is SO cute!
  • Favorite shows; Richard Scarry's Busy Town, Dora, Bob the Builder, Arthur, Frozen, and Peppa Pig.
  • Kate has the best imagination! She loves to pretend and I am always so amused at what she says. She loves playing "Shop Keeper" and will lay out several of her toys and sell them to you. She is quite the salesman and likes to describe the items and tell you why you need to buy them.
  • She loves money! Pretend or imaginary. My mom tried to give her some pennies to throw into a fountain while we were out at Temple Square and Kate just slipped them into her pocket. Same thing even happened when I tried to let her ride one of those quarter rides at the mall.
  • Still loves to swing! She really could swing all day long if I would let her!
  • Other favorite thing to play is school. She loves being the teacher and wants me, Millie, and her stuffed animals to sit down in front of her while she talks to you.
  • Has loved preschool! A few friends from the ward and I organized a once a week joy school of sorts every Tuesday from 9:30-11. Kate is constantly talking about wanting to go to preschool and after telling me everything she learned! I guess that's why she loves playing pretend school at home.
  • She is really growing up! She is listening better and is really so helpful. She loves to help me do just about anything whether it's cooking, helping with Millie, or picking up.
  • Loves to help Tim in the garden! She loved putting the seeds in the ground and on our most recent trip to buy our tomato plants we let her pick one plant for herself...looks like we will be growing eggplant this year!
  • She is such a good friend to Millie! I just can't get over how much these sisters love each other. Kate is always running to get Millie a toy, singing her a song, or trying to make Millie happy if she is crying. Kate loves giving Millie her pacifier and loves making Millie laugh! Now that Millie sits up they can really "play" together.
  • Kate is getting really good at her letters and their sounds. She definitely knows A,B, C, D, H, K, L, M, O, P, Q, T, and X. And knows a lot more of the letters sounds.
  • Has the craziest memory! She remembers everything and everything with great detail. For example, one time we checked out this book from the IC Library...one page had a tear on it. Kate loved this book so we actually ended up buying it months later. To this day whenever we read it she looks for the ripped page and talks about how the library one was ripped right there. She talks about things we did last year with great detail and never forgets if I told her we can do something later. We can't get anything past this one.
  • Favorite phrase fill in the blank"  ____ is going to be so excited to see ______." She says this all the time. For example, Brady is going to be so excited to see my new hat.
  • Sleeping and napping is sometimes tricky. Kate goes to bed between 8-8:30 and I make her stay in her room until 6:45am. She takes an afternoon naps about 75% of the time and if she doesn't usually does really well at having quite time. And about 90% of the time she chooses to have quite time I all of a sudden stop hearing talking and peek in to find her asleep on her bed. Or she will come out and tell me she actually wants to go to sleep :)
  • And last little tidbit...is obsessed with Herky Hunting (blog post to follow soon). The city has recently put up 83 large statues of the beloved University of Iowa mascot all around town. Kate wants to find them all and is always asking to go Herky Hunting. It's pretty dang cute how excited she is about it. We have found 56 so far!
We sure love our Kater-Skater and although sometimes many of her qualities make things difficult, we really do love her big personality and enthusiasm for life!

Mother's Day 2014

Happy Mother's Day! I am so thankful for all of the incredible women in my life! Thank you for your example, love, and support! I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to be a mother to two beautiful girls and pray I can live up to the responsibilities that Heavenly Father has entrusted me with!

Utah Trip- Spring 2014

The girls and I were lucky enough to get to go home for a 10 day visit! We had so much fun and Kate especially loved playing with grandparents and cousins all of the time!

I was a little nervous about flying with both girls by myself...but I am happy to report they did awesome! Kate listened really well, stayed by me, and especially loved this Water Wow thing I bought...it kept her busy for at least an hour each time we pulled it out. And bringingTim's ipad loaded with shows helped too.

Oh how I miss Utah! I miss those gorgeous mountains, the weather, and of course...most of all the people! I loved spending time with family and catching up for some old friends! We packed in a lot of fun including: lots of COUSIN time, the new Aquarium, Zoo, Cafe Rio x3 + other favorite restaurants, lots of park time and swinging, BBQs, Daddy Daughter date to the Symphony, Temple Square, City Creek, Ikea, Scheels (although they wouldn't let Kate ride on the ferris wheel even though she was just a few inches too short), and celebrating Kate's birthday with family! Terrific trip...the only thing missing was Tim!

Amelia- 7 months

Mille turned 7 months while we were out in Utah! This little lady is seriously the sweetest, happiest, and easiest going girl...at least until she is hungry and ready to go to bed...then she becomes what we affectionately call her a "time bomb!"

Here's some Millie facts:
  • Sitting up like a champ! She has been really close and just needed a little support for the longest time...and decided on her 7 month birthday it was time to become a pro. It is SO fun to just set her down and let her go to town playing with toys!
  • She loves her toes...and is now always trying to eat them.
  • Continues to be SO smiley! She now loves to stick out her tongue while she smiles.
  • Has 2 teeth...she got her second one on April 28, 2014.
  • Is the best little eater...I mean really this girl can eat. And she opens her mouth so wide! She nurses 5-6 times everyday and loves eating squash, green beans, peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, applesauce, pears, bananas, mangos, and puffs! Although she eats and enjoys them all...she seems to eat fruits with a bit more gusto. She also really likes trying to drink water from a sippy cup.
  • Believe it or not but those cheeks are starting to get a little smaller.
  • Sleeps from 7pm-7am and takes 2 naps each day!
  • Wears a lot of 3-6 month clothes but is fitting nicely in 6 month clothes!
  • She loves to read stories...or should I say eat the books!
  • Loves looking at pictures of other babies!
  • Grabs EVERYTHING!!!
  • And puts everything into her mouth!
  • Favorite toy...whatever Kate is playing with! Although Kate isn't so sure she likes Millie wanting to play with her things. She also loves her Minnie Mouse stuffed animal, soft squashy books, floor gym, and our little play kitchen.
  • She really is just growing up...it's so fun but hard to believe!

It seems like now whenever I try to get a smile I get this scrunched up nose pose!

Kate totally cracks her up!
