Colony Pumpkin Patch

I can't believe that October is almost here! October...the month that I am due to have my second child...holy smokes! Yes folks I am 38 weeks! Our little Amelia could make her debut anytime. If she's like Kate she could even be here this week!

Anyway, October is absolutely gorgeous out here in Iowa and the temperatures are divine. We had big plans to go visit this fun pumpkin patch that we went to last year but with heavy rain in the forecast and over an hour drive to get there we didn't think it would work I started looking for another place we could go harvest some pumpkins...and I ended up finding this perfect little place less than 15 minutes from our house...the Colony Pumpkin Patch!

It wasn't as large and didn't have as many other activities as the places we've previously been to but it was totally perfect for us and so nice to have it close, and I failed to mention, it was free! They had an awesome variety of pumpkins, a corn pit for kids (and Kate actually liked playing in it this year), and a little barrel train (but Kate didn't want to ride this year). It was a perfect Fall Day and we finished and headed to lunch just before the rain began to pour! Happy Fall, Welcome October!

Kate loves her pumpkins that she picked...especially the little white one!

The Zoo

On Tuesday we finally made it to Niabi Zoo! Unfortunately our closest zoo is in the Quad Cities which is an hour away...I've been meaning to take Kate for awhile finally just as our time just the two of us is almost up we made it. I've been trying to make these last few weeks really special and going to the zoo was a perfect way to do that.

The Niabi Zoo is terrific! It is definitely a small zoo but they have lots of great animals and because it is small you can get amazingly close to the animals. I wish I had a good picture of the lions we were literally 2 feet from them! It was the perfect size for our 2 year olds! Kate loved the elephants, monkeys, and the train the best! She hasn't stopped talking about the tunnel we went in while on the train and was so happy to have some little friends come along!

Apple Picking

We had an terrific, chalk-full-of-fun Fall Saturday! The weather was lovely and we wanted to make the most of it. We started the day off with the Hawkeye Game Day breakfast at the Institute, then headed over to the hospital to tour Labor & Delivery. And I'm happy to report the rooms are spacious and lovely. We then headed up to the local apple orchard Wilson's for some apple picking!

We've visited Wilson's a couple of times but it seems like we have just flat out picked the wrong times to go in the past. Last year the crop was tiny due to bad weather and I think the other time we went it was too late in the season. Thankfully we picked the perfect day this year. We had fun tromping around the orchard and had our pick of apples...there is something so satisfying about picking your own produce, don't you think?! We picked some delicious honey crisp apples and enjoyed their apple cider doughnuts and apple turnovers and even got a tractor ride!

But the fun didn't stop there...we then headed home for Kate's nap where I escaped out to get a pedicure with a friend and then we hosted a BBQ for all the medical students in our ward.  What a great Saturday! We are sure loving having Tim around and are trying to make the most of the time we have left as a family of three! I'm 37 weeks by the way...Amelia will be here before we know it!!!

On the tractor ride...Kate liked it but liked her doughnut more!

It's Showtime

One week ago on September 5th, we headed to the theatre for Kate's first movie theatre experience. We saw Disney's Planes and Kate totally loved it and she did great! She stayed on my lap at the beginning but as she got used to the dark, she wanted to try out each seat on our row. It wasn't until the last 20 minutes that she started to get antsy and wanted to run up and down the aisle and steps. She hasn't stopped talking about "orange one...Dusty...Dusty won..." (Dusty is the name of the main orange airplane for those of you who haven't see it) It was a total hit and it was nice to be able to go see a movie and not have to worry about the logistics of getting a babysitter.

That Toddlin' Town

I've always loved that Frank Sinatra song...and I can't help but sing it over and over again each time we go visit. This past weekend we made a little trip to the Windy City...our last as a family of only three!! We are only about 5 weeks away from meeting our new little lady and we needed an Ikea to finish her room. Unfortunately, Iowa does not have Ikea so we just HAD to make a trip to Chicago... Not to mention the Art Institute was hosting this incredible temporary exhibit on Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity that we just couldn't miss.

Chicago is such a fun city and there is so much to do! I've now been three times and still feel like I've just started to scratch the surface. I really wanted to take Kate to the aquarium but there just wasn't enough time...we selfishly decided we had to go to the art museum...poor Kate! And we were so glad that we did. The exhibit was amazing and Kate did really well. We'd like to think we are just helping her appreciate the finer things in life... Kate especially enjoyed the top hats that they had on exhibit. Unfortunately, they didn't allow us to take any pictures in that

Aside from the Art Institute, we packed in a lot more fun including a trip to Trader Joe's, a walk through Millenium Park to go see "The Bean," ate Chicago dogs, ate deep dish Chicago-style pizza, spent way too much at Ikea, and ended the trip watching the Cougars beat Texas! Great trip!!!

First off, Happy Labor Day! Our day was pretty anticlimactic but we did enjoy a BBQ at the beautiful Kent Park, just outside of Iowa City, with a bunch of friends this evening!

But what I wanted to talk about was our weekend visitors...

My oldest brother Steve and his wife Kristin came to visit us in Iowa City! It was so much fun especially because I never expected to have any (mine or Tim's) siblings visit us while we lived in Iowa. My brother had a conference in Chicago earlier in the week so after Kristin joined him in Chicago they caught the Amtrak train and came to see us. They were only here for a day and half but we squeezed in a lot of fun including a trip to central Iowa to visit the Sokol sites (Collins, State Center, and Marshalltown), ate a Maid-Rite and pork tenderloin sandwich, saw fields of corn and soybeans for miles and miles, and went to Fry Fest here in Iowa City, plus enjoyed playing games and catching up. Unfortunately it was the hottest week of the entire year...literally...but I think they still had a pretty great time. Thanks Steve and Kristin for coming to visit! We loved having you here!
Visiting Collins, IA where my grandparents are both buried
Kate enjoyed the drive...notice Baby (her penguin)
Beautiful corn fields
My Dad's many memories of visiting Grandma and Grandpa Sokol each summer
