19 months

When did this little girl get so big?! We are loving the toddler stage...it's so much fun!! Here's the latest on our favorite girl:
  • Weighs 22 lbs (~30%tile) and is 30 inches (~10%tile) tall.
  • Is ALWAYS talking or singing. Favorite new words "Santa" and "orange." New songs "London Bridges," "We are a Happy Family,""Bingo" and "Jingle Bells."
  • Loves animals.  Especially loves to "meow" like a kitty and can now tell you that sheep say "ba." We're excited to go back to Utah and see Mistek.
  • Kate loves Christmas...the lights, the music, the decorations, Baby Jesus, and Santa! Although as previously described, prefers to view Santa from a distance.
  • Kate loves playing with her Little People nativity set. She especially loves to hold onto and say "Baby Jesus." So cute!
  • Current favorite toys...definitely adores her new shopping cart that Grandpa and Grandma had sent here to Iowa for Christmas! Loves her new bead necklaces, match box cars, and putting real boxes of pudding and canned food into her grocery cart. Still loves her ride-on-Zebra, dollhouse, and play food and microwave.
  • Has recently started wanting to help put away silverware. I'm seriously about this. Just yesterday as she pulled spoons and forks from the basket instead of playing with them she handed them to me one by one. She is my little helper!
  • Penguin is still her best friend and comes with us just about everywhere!
  • Has become a nursery pro...has gone to nursery 5 times now and is doing so well. I'm so proud of her.
  • Enjoys doing headstands.
  • Loves to knock on doors. It's so cute. She makes a fist and really knocks on a closed door and says "Dada."
  • Is beginning to give some getting ready to potty train signs...but I think we are still a ways off.
This happy, thumb-sucking, shy, toddling little girl is our pride and joy!

A special thank you to my friend Melissa for talking these pictures...Kate is a tough subject (ie likes to run away and not smile)...but we still got some really great ones!

A Very Merry Iowa Christmas

With going to Utah for both Thanksgiving and Christmas we've only had 2 1/2 weeks to be home here in Iowa...But I still insisted we pull out all the decorations. Christmas is such a magical time of year and I love the Spirit in our home that comes with decorating and celebrating Christmas. Tim has been extremely busy these last few weeks but we've still made time for a few of our family traditions and Kate and I have had a lot of fun preparing for Christmas. Kate has loved looking at the tree and surprisingly has left the ornaments safely on the tree. She has only pulled off a few bells and candy canes that I purposefully placed at the bottom of the tree for her. Kate loves seeing pictures and decorations of Santa and even waves at and says "Santa" but is totally terrified of sitting on his lap. I've tried twice now to get a pic but with the death grip she has on me I couldn't get one. Maybe next year! And we recently learned that Kate loves being on stage...as part of our church's Christmas party Kate got to participate in the nativity as a shepherd. When it was her turn to come out on stage she enjoyed incessantly waving to Dada, dancing in circles while they sang "Away in a Manger" and at the end blew kisses to the crowd...who knew she'd have such stage presence.

Santa actually made a special trip to our house this weekend so we wouldn't have to worry about packing our gifts back to Iowa. We've had a very Merry Iowa Christmas and are excited for our Utah Christmas!

Thanksgiving in Utah

We're back...back in Iowa, back to real life, back to the grind of school...but only for a few weeks before we get to go back :)

We had a great Thanksgiving filled with family, close friends, good food, and fun memories! We sure have a lot to be thankful for.  Perhaps one of the things I am most thankful for is the ability to go "home" to Utah to visit our families!

We had a great time and packed in a lot of fun. I love Utah!! I love those mountains, I love walking into my parents house, I love running into friends from elementary school at the grocery store, I love sharing my favorite places with Kate, and I especially love watching Kate play with her grandparents and cousins. We'll be back real soon Utah, don't worry!

Happy 18th month Birthday to Kate!
Welcomed by 2 feet of snow
Mickey and Minnie came to visit SLC too!

Playing with cousin Kaylee
Kate picked up an affinity for quarter rides this trip
On campus...she'll be here for real before we know it!

18 months

Our little lady is one and a half years old! How did that happen?! Kate is growing up and is just so much fun!!!  Kate snd I flew out to Utah early to enjoyed some extra time with family before Thanksgiving. We celebrated the big birthday by going shopping, running errands with Grandma, and eating an awesome ice cream cake. Here is an update on our big girl...

  • Kate now says about 30 words all on her own including "kitty cat" and "chair." She also loves copying everything we say. And calls water "wa wa," bananas "ba nan," Cheerios "choo choo" and milk "mill."
  • Kate knows cats say "meow" and doggies say "woof."
  • Her eyes light up when she see Mistek, my family's cat. She loves waving at her and saying "meow" repeatedly.
  • Kate is obsessed with her stuffed animal penguin (see pictures). She can almost always be seen carrying him around. She calls him "baby" and loves to wrap him up with her blankies and share her sippy cup and snacks with him. Kate also adores her other "friends" i.e. stuffed animals and dolls especially "Mi mi" her Minnie Mouse stuffed animal.
  • Kate loves to draw. She loves her newest toy a Magna-Doodle! I am just about ready to declare her a lefty! She predominately uses her left hand but will switch and then use her right. We will have to see! I am sure hoping for a fellow South-paw!
  • Favorite books are Big Bird's Busy, Day Eat Your Colors and Aloha Is.
  • Can identify 2 colors, yellow and red.
  • Takes one 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon each day. Goes to bed at 8pm and gets up at 7am.
  • Especially loves cheese, broccoli, green beans, and any fruit. Not loving beans and meat right now. Loves water and milk and finally tried juice.
  • Loves her grandparents and cousins!! And loves being in Utah to see them :)
  • Loves to sing. Is always singing. Especially loves to sing "I Am A Child of God," "ABCs," and a new favorite "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
  • Still sucking her thumb!
  • Weight and height to come. Her 18 month well-child appointment isn't until we get back to Iowa.

We sure love our Kate! We have loved every minute of the last year and a half! Let the fun continue...

Moving On

Despite our major disappointment last night I am very thankful to live in this great country and will be praying for those that lead it.

I am also very thankful for a little girl who helps me remember what is most important...my family!

Election Day 2012

Well...tomorrow is the big day! We've been waiting, with a lot of enthusiasm and anxiety, for this day for a long time. I'm thankful it is almost here and will be over soon...

I originally planned to vote on actual Election Day but the fact that I am going to be busy poll watching  I decided to take advantage of early voting. Take a look...No surprise here...it was very exciting to pencil in my vote for Mitt Romney!!! Crazy Iowa still uses paper ballots!

Here's to hoping that America gets it right!!

Halloween 2012

Happy Halloween! We hope that all of you have had a fun day! We were really excited about our Star Wars costumes this year! And how appropriate with the big news of Disney buying Lucas Ltd. Unfortunately, Kate did NOT like wearing her Ewok hood but we were able to get her to wear it just long enough to sneak a few pictures.

We started celebrating with our ward Halloween Party this past Saturday. Kate enjoyed her first cake walk and trunk-or-treat. It was totally darling to watch her walk from car to car holding her cute little kitty cat treat bag.

Not too excited to be wearing the hood

Then today the med school hosted a Halloween parade and mini-trick-or-treat for the kids! There aren't too many med students with children...but we had 10 kids come! We enjoyed visiting with friends, getting some great treats, and having lunch with Tim.

Visiting the med school admin offices
Kate actually let me put her hood on and she wore it for about 2 minutes

The cutest ewok I've ever seen!

Happy Halloween and May the Force be with you!!

Less Than 2 Weeks

Holy smokes! I can't believe we are down to 10 days until Election Day! Oh boy!

Over the past few months I have been heavily involved in the 2012 Presidential Election. I have always tried to be politically involved, but this year has been different. I've never felt so strongly or been so passionate about a particular candidate as I am about Mitt Romney! And living in such a crucial swing state I have taken to the streets and phones doing what I can to help! This past week was especially exciting...

We (me, Kate, and my mom) first attended a "Women for Mitt" event that was totally awesome. Six women that worked in Mitt's Massachusetts cabinet or with him during the Olympics came to share their stories. I was totally impressed and particularly impressed to learn how Mitt used his business background to work with Bristol-Myers Squibb and made it possible for them to build a major factory in Massachusetts instead of building a factory outside the U.S., thus creating thousands of jobs for the people of MA. When Mitt says he can improve the economy...I know he can!

Then we were lucky enough to attend a rally in Cedar Rapids with Mitt!! It was electrifying to be at this event and hear him speak!

If your interested, here's a link from the Cedar Rapids Gazette newspaper covering the event as well as some of the awesome photos they took:

Notice the darling little girl in purple and white (circled)...that's Kate!! How awesome is that?!

Oh and I meant to share this a while back...Back in September I attended another event at the Johnson County GOP Headquarters when Reince Prebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, came to Coralville. I got interviewed by a Gazette reporter...they didn't actually use anything that I said but I loved that they mentioned Kate. Check it out
